As is sometimes the case, the beauty and magnificence of this piece of property was not enhanced or appreciated by existing architecture. While we had been working with our clients for six months to choose land on which to design and build a new residence, one visit to a carelessly designed but sturdily built house on this stunning land convinced us that a thoughtful renovation and addition would turn a "sow's ear into a silk purse".

Vernacular farm country architecture appealed to our clients who have moved to Vermont from Rhode Island. The original floor plan of the tall story cape was reconfigured to fit in with the existing timber framed structure. A 1 1/2 story addition was added on the south side to create a new living room with a new master bedroom above. A new master bath was tucked into the place where a small bedroom existed before.

The existing garage was renovated into a formal entry and a home office. The new 3 bay garage is located in the "barn" with symbolic foundations of a series of dry laid stone walls made from a beautiful green gray schist rock blasted from an adjacent construction site. We designed these stone walls to look like remnants of the foundations of older out buildings. Typical of our firm, we collaborated with our clients and the contractor on the interior design, including kitchen design, lighting layout, fixture selection and selection of paint colors and finishes.
