Estate Working Barn
We were asked by our client to design a working barn that would evoke a sense of history. This beautiful building will be fully timber framed with large, hand hewn timbers. The frame has been designed in collaboration with Liberty Head Post and Beam with traditional full mortise and tenon framing, crafted from locally sawn hemlock.
The site presented us with an opportunity to create a high drive (a feature with local historical precedent) due to the steeply sloping site just into the open woods carpeted with mosses, ferns and outcroppings of ledge. The symmetry, simple geometry and historically influenced windows and doors of the structure are the insignia of the classic American barn.
The interior and exterior of the lower level will be faced with lichen covered stones picked out of nearby fields. The interior and exterior boarding and floors will be the traditional barn cladding and flooring of rough sawn boards.
